Frederick W. Taylor How Did Taylor’s Approach to Management
Resemble the Assembly Line Approach to Manufacturing
2
Background Info Post Civil War The Nation Entered a New Industrial Age
Current manufacturing = inefficient for mass production New system needed to be devised
3
Frederick Taylor - The Efficiency Pioneer
Wanted to eliminate the wasting of human effort Believed there was a most efficient way to complete any task Used “Scientific Management” Found the optimal method to complete a task by using precise measurements and observations This system reduced waste and allowed for: Fewer workers to accomplish the same task Reduced cost of production
4
Similar to Assembly Line Manufacturing?
Initially goods were made by hand Took longer to build Expensive Assembly line approach: Divided labor - certain processes for certain components Products could be assembled one after another Resulted in more efficient manufacturing (less waste) Goods could be produced quicker Goods could cost significantly less
