Teaching Methods Every Teacher Should Know (use)
The worst teaching method is the one… that you use the most!
5
Story Telling Someone share the story of the four men that tore the roof off a home in order to bring their friend to Jesus
6
Story Telling After the story is told… What new details did you learn?
What got left out of the story? Read the passage from the Bible (Mark 2:1-12) What person in this story do you best identify with? Why? What application can you make to your life from this Bible passage?
7
Story Telling How to use story telling…
Works best with narrative passages Pre-enlist a group member to share the story Have the storyteller add or omit details from the story After the story is told, ask the group what details were omitted What details were new or added? After the discussion, actually read the Bible passage in the group and share their perspectives
8
Group Discussion In groups of five, read Romans 5:12-21 Compare sin and righteousness as discussed in this passage
9
Group Discussion Group discussion works very well with didactic (instructive) Bible passages. Group discussion… Allows for discussion Generally involves inductive Bible study Helps build group members’ Bible study skills Develops potential leaders
10
Experience Read Luke 10:1-12, 17-18
What assignment did Jesus give the 70 disciples? What did Jesus do to prepare them? (refer to chapters 8 & 9) Why did Jesus put them in groups of two? What were the results? What did Jesus do when they had their next group meeting? (vs 17-18)
11
Experience How to teach using experience
Experience necessitates an “out of class” experience Give specific instructions Provide accountability Allow time for participants to share their experiences with the group Affirm and celebrate
12
5Q Read Matthew 16:13-19 What learning process did Jesus use?
How did the disciples respond? What did Jesus do get the disciples to share their thoughts about Him? To whom did Jesus credit Simon Peter’s confession?
13
Jesus often used questions as a learning process of discovery
14
5Q Using 5Q (questions) The “5” is a suggested number of questions
5 questions is about how many good questions that are needed for a one hour group meeting Build questions from easy to more difficult Prepare the five questions as you study the passage yourself (what questions did you have) Use a broad question to build interest (note Jesus’ question in verse 13)
15
5Q (continued) Ask the introductory question before reading the Bible passage Avoid rhetorical questions by counting to ten after asking a question Use positive response to correct or good answers; neutral to incorrect answers Draw out deeper thoughts by saying “Tell me more” after a participant responds
16
Application Read James 3:3-12 How can you apply this Bible teaching to your life this week?
17
Application Application is critical for transformational learning Offer application during and at the close of every Bible study “What would it look like if you weave today’s Bible study into your life this week?” Use and text to remind your group of the application Encourage your group to respond back to you with testimonies of Bible application
18
Presentation Presentation is a combination of 5Q and group study Ask your group to form smaller groups Provide a tear sheet and markers for each group Give the groups the Bible passage to be studied and 3 to 5 good questions about the passage Inform the group that they will present their discussion to the entire group Allow minutes for interaction Allow 3-5 minutes for each group’s presentation
19
Advantages of Using Presentation
Encourages dialogue Allows the teacher to observe how individuals respond in a group setting (leaders, thinkers, responders, and processors) Subtle pressure on the group to come up with resolutions instead of circular discussion Excellent method to study long or multiple passages in a short amount of time
