1
Doppler effect/ Phase shift
Directions: Turn on the red button Swing over head around you. Be sure to not hit anyone. Listen to the pitch of the sound as it is higher when it comes toward you and lower as it moves away from you How does it work? As the box is moving toward you, the sound waves bunch up and make short wavelengths, resulting in a high frequency sound. As it moves away from you the sound wave are trailing and make a longer wavelengths, resulting in low frequency sound.
2
Absorption/Reflection
Directions: Make a wet mount slide of the Elodea leaf water plant. Observe the color of the chloroplasts. Practice using scanning, low and high power lenses. Discard slide in beaker with glass on desk. Why is it green? The plant’s absorbs all colors except green for energy. The plant’s chloroplast reflects the green light which is why it appears green to our eyes.
3
Refraction Directions: Turn on white light.
Pass it through the magnifying lens. What happens to the light? **Demo: Broken Pencil Refraction of light: The plane waves of the light are refracted through the lens and are focused into a smaller wave. It is possible to start fires with this energy.
4
Transverse Wave Use the spring to create transverse waves.
Find the parts of the wave. Crest Trough Wavelength Amplitude
5
Wave caused by Disturbance
Directions: Hit tuning fork on wooden block. Place in water. Observe. A wave is just a disturbance in a medium. What happens to the water when you put the vibrating tuning fork in it?
6
Longitudinal (Compression) Wave
Directions: Use the slinky to create compression waves. Observe. Find the parts of the compression wave. Compression Refraction Wavelength
7
Diffraction of water Directions:
Disturb the water with the stir rod. Notice the movements of the water. What happens to the water at is moves through the open boundary?
8
Diffraction of water Directions:
Disturb the water with the stir rod. Notice the movements of the water. What happens to the water at is moves passes around the boundaries?
9
Reflection wave Directions: Turn on laser.
**Caution with the laser. Do not shine in eyes! Turn on laser. Shine laser on mirror, but point down. Notice the angle of reflection. Terms to think about. Angle of incidence Angle of reflection Normal line
10
Polarization Directions: Use the two black films.
Set them on top of each other and turn until they are completely black. Polarization filters specific directions of light waves. Why do you think the films turn completely black when turned a certain way?
11
Constructive Interference
Use the slinky to create interference where two crests, or two troughs meet. What happens to the amplitude of the new crest or trough?
12
Destructive Interference
Use the slinky to create interference where a crest and trough meet. What happens to the amplitude as they collide?
