2. Summary
In this part of the poem everyone becomes confused. As they are on the boat sitting on the water, there is a sailboat that is moving without there being any wind to move the ship. As the shit sail across the water it passes in front of the sun and as it passes the ship becomes a silhouette looking like a skeleton. The people on the ship are then faced with DEATH AND LIFE-IN-DEATH, as those two things begin to gamble over who gets to take the peoples souls LIFE-IN-DEATH wins. The eyes in the poem are very important as they are the window to the soul. Right before LIFE-IN-DEATH takes everyones soul but the Mariners, everyone looks at him with anger in their eyes to show him they know this is his fault.

3. Important passage 1 "Are those her ribs through which the Sun
Did peer, as through a grate?
And that Woman all her crew?
Is that DEATH? and are there two?
Is DEATH that woman's mate?...
And the twain were castinf dice;
'The game is done! I've won! I've won!'
Quoth she, and she whistles thrice. (Ln )

4. Analysis 1
As something approaches the ship, the mariner sees a woman who is supposedly death's mate and she is the only crew. There is no one else to be seen aboard. Next, the crew hears them playing dice and deciding one who wins or dies on the ship and the lady claims she won. The woman appears to be a skeleton as the sun shines through her like a grate. This might a hallucination by the mariner, as he is stranded out at sea and hasn't had food or water for days. This symbolizes the fact that all of the crew is about to die as death approaches the ship. Also death's name is all capitalized and this shows off his significance and importance. Also they just play over the life and death of the sailors like it is a silly game.

5. Important Passage 2 “One after one, by the star-dogged Moon
Too quick for groan or sigh,
Each turned his face with a ghastly pang,
And cursed me with his eye.” ( )
“Four times fifty living men,
(And I heard nor sigh nor groan)
With heavy thump, a lifeless lump,
They dropped down one by one.” ( )

6. Analysis 2
Tons of men were on board the ship. 200 to be exact. As soon as the mysterious ship appeared the men aboard the vessel suddenly started to drop dead. They dropped in such a manor that it was described that the men “dropped down one by one” as if they were “a lifeless lump” ( ). This mysterious happening is obviously not common and somewhat supernatural; inferring that the ship that had witnessed was a ghost ship. Although this could all be symbolism as the stranded sailors were describing how hunger and plague killed off the mariners crew in such a sudden and disruptive manor that all of the crew seemed to be dropping by some unseen force. This passage is especially important because it is the stanza in which the crew actually died after seeing the ship.
