4 Behaviour is subjective
The Course Predictions Behaviour is subjective Social Scientists look for pattern to predict reoccurring behaviours Try not to be offended with the absolutes… Textbook is THE HUMAN WAY - It guides some of the lessons. Debates and analytical processing is what really stimulates people studying the field of social sciences. Research – primary and secondary You will conduct your own primary research and come to your own conclusions

5 Unit 1-Research Research – what it is, how to use it, etc Writing reports Sourcing And some Learning to decipher the subtle differences between the three main fields of study.

6 Questions?

7 The Social Sciences What do social scientist study? Human behaviour
Why? To understand why people do what they do – so we can then make society a better place for all

8 Let’s crank up that brain… Let’s use Social Science to Resolve an Issue
Grad a copy of The Human Way from the back of the classroom, work alone or in a pair. Turn to page 8 « Point and Counterpoint » Summarize both sides Develop the social sciences hypothesis (if x occurs, then y should happen) What findings did the statistics actually reveal?

9 Using Social Science to Resolve an Issue – pg 8
Is the death penalty a deterrent? Yes: execution serves as warning and discourages others from murdering. Revenge is a universal human instinct. No: waste of valuable resources, innocent sometimes executed, has brutalizing effect that may result in more murders.

10 The Social Science Hypothesis
If the death penalty is a deterrent, homicide rates should rise when it is no longer in place.

11 Findings homicide rates remained fairly stable after the death penalty was abolished. states in the U.S. that use the death penalty had higher homicide rates than those that do not.

12 Conclusion the death penalty is not a deterrent for homicide.
