1
Equivalent Equations Objectives: Student will be able to identify equivalent equations and construct equivalent equations.
2
Equivalent Equations Basic idea is to make sure you do the same thing to both sides of the equation to keep them balanced Each step you do creates an equivalent equation, just 1 step closer to solving the equation.
3
Investigation No given these 15 equations group them into equivalent equations. There should be 4 groups.
4
Properties Distributive property – value outside gets multiplied to all inside Commutative Property of Addition 2 terms Order for adding doesn’t matter Commutative Property of Multiplication 2 terms Order that you multiply terms doesn’t matter Associative Property of Addiction 3 terms Associative Property of Multiplication 3 terms
5
More Properties Additive Property – if we add the same thing to both sides the equation stays equal Subtraction Property – if we subtract the same thing from both sides the equation stays equal Multiplication Property – multiply the same thing to both sides, equation stays equal Division Property – divide both sides by the same thing, equation stays equal
6
Using Properties We have already discussed this but can you state the property being used in each step of an equations
