Important Vocabulary Popular vote: when registered voters cast their ballots Electoral College: numbers of members based on total representation each state has in legislative branch. People who represent each state’s overall popular vote

The Process Historically, the popular is vote held on 2nd Tuesday of November, although today many states have “early voting”. People can also vote via mail (“absentee voting”) Votes are counted for each state and a winner for each state is decided, based on the majority Six weeks later, members of the Electoral College cast their votes. In order to win, a presidential candidate must get the “magic number”. Today, that is 270 votes. If no candidate reaches 270 votes, the members of the House of Representatives take a vote and decide who the president is. a. 1800, 1824, 1876 elections were decided by the House
