1 Writing A Chemical Equation from a Word Equation

2 Write the symbols for the reactants.
Steps Write the symbols for the reactants. Diatomic atoms are atoms that are never found alone in nature, they have to be written as 2 atoms together. Find the charges of the ions and balance them. Write the formula. (Remember your Type 1, 2, and 3 review) Add the state of matter to your compound. Solid (s) Liquid (l) Gas (g) Solution (aq)

3 Add the math symbols to show what reacts.
“And” or “combines” means plus sign. “Reacts to form” or “to produce” means arrow. Predict the products for the reaction. Balance the equation.

4 Examples Hydrogen gas and Nitrogen monoxide gas react to form…
A solution of Aluminum iodide and solid mercury (II) chloride react to form…

5 Describing a Chemical Equation

6 Name the given formulas. (Remember your Type 1, 2, and 3 review)
Steps: Name the given formulas. (Remember your Type 1, 2, and 3 review) Describe the state of matter. (s) Solid (l) Liquid (g) Gaseous (aq) solution Consider if the compound is ionically bonded or covalently bonded. Ionic: between metals and non-metals Covalent: between two non-metals

7 Convert the math symbols to words.
Steps (cont.) Convert the math symbols to words. + = “Add” “Combine” “Poured into”  = “reacts to form” “to produce” Write the information in sentence format.

8 Examples 2ZnS (s) + O2 (g)  2ZnO (s) + 2S (s) AgNO3 (aq) + NaCl (aq)  AgCl (S) + NaNO3 (aq)
