The Rise to Power of Henry of Navarre
Henry III ( ) last heir of Henry II to wear a French crown. Henry III becomes the king during a monarchy which is stuck between a radical catholic league formed by Henry of Guise and vengeful Huguenots. Henry sought to be neutral. Politiques - Rulers/people in power who put well-being of states above all else.

Peace of Beaulieu (May 1576) granted the huguenots almost complete religious and civil freedom. Catholic league forced Henry III to create absolute religious unity. October 1577, the king truncated the Peace of Beaulieu. The two side split up again. Protestant were led by Henry the Navarre the actual heir to French throne as he is the direct descent of St. Louis IX.

During the mid 1580s, Catholic league with Spanish support and become dominant in Paris. Day of Barricades - Henry III surprised attacked the leagues in 1588. Henry III flee back to Paris as they lost. Assassinated the Duke and Cardinal of Guise which made France angry. Was forced to strike alliance with Henry of Navarre (April 1589).

Henry the Navarre becomes Henry the IV the french king when Henry III is killed by a Dominican Friar. Pope Sixtus V and Philip II of spain rush to help the catholic league. People like Henry IV as he is technically the direct heir to the throne. Henry IV uses wit and charm to neutralize the enemy and turn the kingdom into Catholicism. The Huguenots were horrified and Pope Clement VIII was skeptical with Henry the Navarre sincerity.

The Edict of Nantes On April 13, 1598, Henry issued the Edict of Nantes which is set up to end religious fighting. Gave Huguenots the freedom to worship, right to assembly, admission to public offices and universities, and permission to maintain fortified towns. Treaty of Vervins ended hostilities between France and Spain. Edict change the hot war into the cold one. Basically a state within a state. Louis XIV revokes the Edict of Nantes in 1685.

Edict of Nantes (cont..) A catholic fanatic assassinated Henry IV in May 1610. Henry IV laid the foundations for the transformation of france into absolute state.
