Graphing Notes
2
Types of Graphs Line Graph – used to show relationships between variables and changes over time. Bar Graph – used for comparisons Circle Graph – used to show percentages of a whole. The entire circle equals 100%
3
Labeling Line & Bar Graphs
Title – Describes what graph represents; include both the independent and dependent variables. X-axis – the independent variable, along bottom, include units (seconds, cm, etc.) Y-axis – the dependent variable, along side, include units (ml, g, etc.)
4
Numbering Graphs Number the lines on the x and y axes in even increments (by 1s, 2s, 5s, or 10s) Always start with zero Graph should take up at least 3/4th of the area given
5
Line Graph Points Ordered pair – A set of #s that describe the x value and y value of a point on a graph (x, y). The x is the independent variable The y is the dependent variable
6
Example Independent Variable: Time of Day (on x-axis)
Temperature (on y-axis) Ordered Pairs: (7:00 am, 8) (9:00 am, 9) (11:00 am, 11) (1:00 pm, 14) (3:00 pm, 12) (5:00 pm, 10) (7:00 pm, 6) (hours)
