3 About Enbridge Gas Distribution
Largest gas distributer in Canada with 2.0+ million customers Approximately 36,000 km of natural gas pipelines (mains) plus service lines Approximately 3 billion dollars worth of physical assets One of the fastest growing natural gas distribution companies in North America with an average of 36,000 customers added each year

4 The Problem Relights of customer appliances are required during regulator station rebuilds and repairs. Relights result in inconvenience and cost. Motivated Enbridge Gas Distribution (EGD) to look for ways to minimize relights during regulator station repairs.

5 The Idea Mobile gas storage display at AGA conference.
Consisted of compressed natural gas cylinders mounted on trailers that are used to temporarily supply natural gas to customers during pipeline interuptions. Need a solution that was more compact for highly congested areas due to our urban franchise area.

6 The Proposed Solution EGD’s solution was to mount compressed gas cylinders onto the back of a pick-up truck. Cylinders, tubing and regulation system all installed in the back of the pick-up truck. This would result in a compact mobile system for supplying gas during station repairs. Our Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Supply Vehicle was conceived.

7 Pilot Prototype designed and built by EGD.
Construction led by Distribution Technology department with involvement of the following departments: Natural Gas Vehicle Measurement and Regulation Environmental Health and Safety Pipeline safety and transportation regulators were consulted during construction.

8 Components Built on 1 ton pick-up truck frame.
Vehicles consists of 16, 65L, pressure cylinders mounted on rack. Cylinders are manifolded together with tubing. Regulation system regulate pressure to the appropriate customer delivery pressure. Hose connects to the piping downstream of first cut regulators to transfer the gas to the customer station.

9 Specifications 6,000 cubic feet of total gas capacity.
Operating range up to 1,500,000 btu/hour. Vehicle can be set up to deliver pressures from 7” w.c. up to 64 psig. Trucks can be refilled in 45 minutes at a Natural Gas Refueling Station.

10 Procedures Detailed procedures developed by Engineering and Operations. Applications: When the vehicle can and cannot be used. Planning: Steps to prepare for use of the vehicle. Operations: Procedures for fueling, driving, parking and operating the vehicles. Maintenance: Vehicle and equipment maintenance procedures. Emergencies: Emergency procedures. Training: All necessary training for field staff.

11 Applications Condominium on King St near downtown Toronto.
Existing regulator station needed to be replaced. CNG Supply Vehicle maintained gas supply during replacement. Eliminated 50 relights. Eliminated customer and company inconvenience .

17 Results CNG Supply Vehicle is an effective solution to minimize the number relights during regulator station rebuilds and repairs. Pilot vehicle successfully used over 20 times, saving $130,000. Four new vehicles built and approved by safety regulator. EGD’s field employees and managers are very supportive of the technology.

18 Lessons Learned The Vehicles were a success due to a number of factors: Engage stakeholders to ensure the design meets their needs. Understand the capabilities and limitations of the technology and communicate this to the stakeholders. Work with a champion on the operations side to assist with introducing and implementing the technology.

19 Next Steps Consider developing a procedure that allows the vehicle to be used for emergency gas supply. Look into larger vehicles for larger load applications. Work with operators to find additional improvements to existing procedures.
