Racial Problems 民族问题

Sub-races There are 56 “sub-races” in China. The biggest sub-race is Han (汉), which is dominating and represents the mainstream of Chinese culture. More than 90% of the whole population are Han, and there are 55 minorities who have very different cultures and languages. There are 5 “Minorities Autonomic Provinces” and also “Minorities Autonomic Counties” in other common provinces. Minorities receive some advantages, such as lower “score line” on College Entrance Exam, permission have two children, etc. Most minorities are very “Hanised” and get along well with Han people, and only Wei people, Tibetan and Hui people (Muslims in China) have conflicts with Han people.

Tibet Problem Tibet has been a part of China for hundreds of years.
Most Tibet people are Buddhists, and the Buddhism they believe is somewhat different from Buddhism in other areas. Dalai Lama, the former Tibet leader, announced Tibet should be an independent country. He left China in 1959 because of discontentment to the central government.

Taiwan Problem In 1949, the Communist Party defeated the Nationalist Party and founded the People’s Republic of China. The Nationalist Party fled to Taiwan and founded a government there. Taiwan people share the same culture and language with people in other areas, but being ruled under a different government, some Taiwanese now want Taiwan to be an independent country. The Chinese central government can’t afford losing Taiwan and wants the situation keeps the same as what it is like today. Some people say war would be a possibility if Taiwan government insists to be independent.
