1 Long-Term Effects of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs and Cyclooxygenase-2 Selective Agents on the Small Bowel: A Cross-Sectional Capsule Enteroscopy Study  Laurence Maiden, Bjarni Thjodleifsson, Anna Seigal, Ingvar Iain Bjarnason, David Scott, Sigurbjorn Birgisson, Ingvar Bjarnason  Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology  Volume 5, Issue 9, Pages (September 2007) DOI: /j.cgh Copyright © 2007 AGA Institute Terms and Conditions

2 Figure 1 Type and frequency of macroscopic findings in patients on long-term NSAIDs and COX-2–selective agents. The main finding in healthy controls were petechia/red spots. There was a significant (P < .05) increase in the prevalence of all lesions in patients on anti-inflammatory drugs apart from strictures and intestinal bleeding without lesions. Although the prevalence of lesions was less with COX-2–selective agents, this did not reach statistical difference (P > .05) for any of the lesions or collectively for them all. 3 Figure 2 NSAID-induced diaphragm strictures of the small bowel. (A) Diaphragm-like lesion of the small bowel. There is an ulcer rim at the leading edge of the diaphragm. The lesion represents an early phase of the formation of the diaphragm and the narrowing of the lumen is modest. (B) Classic capsule enteroscopy appearance of NSAID-induced stricture of the small bowel. There is villous blunting on the mucosal side of the diaphragm and a circular ulcer that narrows the lumen sufficiently severely for some food residue to be held up proximal to the stricture. The capsule passed the stricture within 10 minutes. Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology 2007 5, DOI: ( /j.cgh ) Copyright © 2007 AGA Institute Terms and Conditions
