1 Section 1 Measuring Motion p. 316
Chapter 10 Motion Section 1 Measuring Motion p. 316

2 Compare the difference between speed and velocity Analyze speed graphs
Objectives Compare the difference between speed and velocity Analyze speed graphs

3 Motion- the object’s change in position relative to a reference point
I. Observing motion (it must have a reference point/stationary object) A. Direction and distance (the total path traveled) B. Displacement- change in position of an object 1. Must be a straight line (Usually shorter than distance) 2. Must include a direction

4 A. Speed is distance divided by time (when motion occurs)
II. Speed and Velocity A. Speed is distance divided by time (when motion occurs) 1. SI unit is m/s 2. Constant speed is speed that does not change B. Speed can be determined by a distance-time graph Distance Time

5 C. Average Speed- distance/time
D. Instantaneous speed- over a very small amount of time, what it is traveling at that point E. Velocity 1. Speed plus a direction 2. Resultant Velocity- a combination of velocities added together
