Anti-aliasing Smoothes the lines or transitions between neighboring colors and shapes in an image Anti-aliased Aliased You can clearly see that in the aliased example on the left, no attempt has been made to tidy up the edges. The hard stepping that you can see is called aliasing, or breakout. In the image on the right you can see that the software has added mid-colors between the white background and the black outline, and between the black outline and the blue fill.
