Hungary 1956 – Imre Nagy Ended one party rule and withdrew Hungary from the Warsaw Pact Hungarian freedom fighters tried to resist Soviet rule – Nagy called the west for help, but none came – thousands died and Nagy was executed

Solidarity – independent trade union The Polish government outlawed the union and arrested its leaders, including Walesa 1989 they held free elections and the Solidarity candidates triumphed – Lech Walesa was elected President a year later

He was overthrown and executed
