Licensing, Copyrights, Piracy, and Pilferage: The protection and theft of products

Software Licensing Software licensing is when the consumer may purchase the software but ultimately does not own the software. The software still belongs to the manufacturer. There are different types of software licensing. Some are based on the number of machines that the software can be used on Some are based on the number of users allowed to use the software

Site Licensing A license to use software within a facility. It provides authorization to install the software on all or some servers for a specific number of users at specific locations. It also allows the creation of copies of the software for distribution within that certain area.

Piracy The illegal copying, distribution, or use of software
Types of piracy are: Softlifting: Borrowing and installing a copy of a software application from a friend. Client-server overuse: Installing more copies of the software than you have licenses for. Hard-disk loading: Installing and selling unauthorized copies of software on refurbished or new computers. Counterfeiting: Making copies and selling copyrighted programs.

Copyright The exclusive right of a creator to reproduce, prepare derivative works, distribute, perform, display, sell, lend or rent their creations.

Pilferage The act of stealing small amounts or small articles

Self Taught Software engineer Most famous for decoding the content-scrambling system which is used in DVD licensing enforcement Helped create and release the DeCSS which decodes DVD’s in order to copy them Johansen was prosecuted in Norway for computer hacking but the charges were later dropped because it was legal to make copies of DVD’s for personal use
