Based on the scientific research in reading
K-2 emphasis on foundational skills (phonological awareness, phonics, structure of the language…), and developing automaticity 3-6 emphasis on foundational skills, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing

Phonological awareness
Phonological Awareness – ability to notice the sound structure of spoken words – rhyming books, pattern books, concept books

Phonics Phonics – alphabet books, books with simple text (basic words)

Vocabulary Vocabulary: dictionary skills, concept books ( Color, Mousling’s Words)

Fluency Fluency: read picture books they can read to each other

Comprehension Comprehension: choose books to read that require discussion ( books that teach literary devices)

Writing Writing: The Important Book, Fortunately

Collaborate with higher education to improve instruction, support teachers and promote a deeper understanding of the science of reading Provide access to articles in Traveler databases (ERIC, ProQuest) to promote that deeper understanding, support PLC professional book studies on instructional strategies, etc.

Collaborate with the Arkansas DHS Early Childhood division to promote literacy access for those at home or in preschools Literacy Professional development for early childhood

Collaborate with business and civic partners to promote a culture of reading within the state and within individual communities Currently developing criteria to recognize communities, organizations, businesses, and other groups as RISE entities. What are you doing that would fit in this category?
