Have students discuss with elbow partners
Have students discuss with elbow partners. Assign roles (red = observation, black = inference), then switch. Call at random for sample answers. 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 countdown to wrap up partner discussion.

Point out that students can make observations like “the ocean is blue” or “there is a man in a yellow kayak” but that these are not RELEVANT observations to the inference. Students should focus on “what’s really important in this picture?” while making their observations.
