Stroke Rehabilitation & Recovery:
Collaborative efforts of the HSE & CSSG improving Patient Outcomes Ryan A., Kilcommons C., Foley M.J., Johnson M., Doyle A., Gallagher P., Robinson S., Desmond C., Hartigan I., Holten A. & Smithers M. ENJOYMENT EXERCISE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT INFORMATION EDUCATION ENABLEMENT Rehabilitation and recovery post stroke requires strength of both body and spirit. The term Stroke Survivor focuses on a person’s resilience, hopefulness and ability. In the absence of additional support, many stroke survivors are unable to sustain motivation. The Cork Stroke Support Group (CSSG) was set up in 2011 by healthcare professionals in St Finbarr’s Hospital with involvement of Stroke Survivors & Volunteers, A range of weekly activities ease the transition from hospital to home, optimises function and boosts coping strategies of stroke survivors & carers. CSSG has purchased exercise equipment for the Stroke Rehab Unit. The CSSG is now one of the most active groups in the Country receiving regional & national awards 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2016 ‘I have often wondered at the dynamic within our group & speculated about the origins of it’s sucess. At CSSG sessions, the prevailing approach by health care professionals and volunteers is person centred and interactive at our level. This promotes understanding and trust which pays dividends at a micro level ie. group sessions and is the basis for quality improvement at a macro level. I believe we should invite others to view the ‘miracle’ in progress in St Finbarr’s Hospital’. Anthony Holten, Stroke Survivor & CSSG Chairman Acknowledging the support of Management & Staff of St Finbarr’s Hospital, Volunteers, Stroke Survivors and additional agencies such as the Irish Heart Foundation, Headway, COPE Foundation & UCC.
