What is an NIH NRSA T32 Training Grant?
Objectives Funds: Prepares trainees for a career in research – academic or other Trainee stipend & tuition Requires and develops an existing pipeline for diverse recruits Career development, teaching, & research activities FOAs may fund predoctoral, doctoral, and/or postdoctoral May fund trainee travel Each I/C has its own requirements; due dates vary by I/C

What is an NSF NRT Training Grant?
Prepares trainees for a career in research – academic or other Benefits not only trainees but also wider graduate community Requires and develops an existing pipeline of diverse recruits Funds trainees stipend & tuition Funds MS or doctoral research trainees Often includes industrial partners Focuses on one of six of the NSF’s Big Ideas Promotes interdisciplinarity

Training Grant Components
Clear Objectives & Quality Program Program that includes special features (e.g., lab rotations, seminar series, entrance requirements; advisory committee) Responsible conduct of research Leadership Director, a well-recognized scientist with a long training track record Senior-level faculty with publications history, grants from NIH or similar agencies, and training experience Trainees Track record of past success with trainees Adequate source of trainees Diversity recruitment plan

University Decision Support (UDS) NU’s institutional data repository and external data requests NU Factbook in Tableau College-level Data Officers Departments PI Some exceptional data will need to be gathered by participating PIs Start as early as possible and inform UDS & your College ASAP

Table: NRT Recruitment, Mentoring and Retention Recruitment and retention outcomes for the past 5 years For each participating department, provide: # students admitted (e.g ) % retention (those that have completed or are still enrolled) Time to degree (yrs) Comparisons with national-level data are strongly encouraged You will also need to provide the URM/disability/disadvantaged & female stats of your potential trainee pool
