1 Response in Plants

2 Good morning! Get your notebooks and do the following:
Title the next blank page: Response in Plants Don’t forget to put it in your table of contents Under the title write this essential question: EQ: What are different types of plant responses? Warm up: What is xylem and what does it do? What is phloem and what does it do? What is a stoma and what does it do?

3 Plant Response Foldable
Take a piece of printer paper and make 3 tabs Tape it on the left side of the page Write these titles on the 3 tabs: Phototropism Thigmotropism Gravitropism/Geotropism

4 Plant Response Foldable
Watch this video Under the phototropism tab Write your own definition about what happened in the video

5 Plant Response Foldable
Watch this video Under the Thigmotropism tab Write your own definition about what happened in the video

6 Plant Response Foldable
Watch this video Under the Gravitropism/Geotropism tab Write your own definition about what happened in the video

7 What are Tropisms? A plants’ growth in a certain direction in response to a stimuli 2 categories: Positive – toward a stimulus Negative – away from a stimulus

8 What are the Types of Tropisms?
Definition Picture Phototropism Tendency of a plant to grow toward a light source. May only take hours to do this Thigmotropism Some plants respond to touch/stimuli Gravitropism/Geotropism Plants respond to gravity If a plant is horizontal, the stem will build upward and the roots will bend downward

9 What are some plant hormones?
Auxins – controls growth and cell elongation, inhibits lateral (side) growth, stimulates root growth Cytokinins – stimulates cell division, opposite of auxins Gibberellins – stimulates growth and stimulates seed germination Abscisic Acid – slows or stops cell division (growth), promotes seed dormancy Ethylene – stimulates fruits to ripen, causes leaves to fall in autumn

10 Gallery Walk Make a table in your journal Station # Sketch
Type of response? How you know Positive or negative? How do you know? 1 2 3 4 5

11 Tropism lab We will be seeing gravitropism by growing Radish seeds in groups Day 1: Set up seeds Draw prediction Day 2: Record data on sheet Answer conclusion questions

12 Exit ticket On a piece of paper: Write the 3 tropisms
Write a definition for each tropism Write an example for each tropism
