1 FLAMES – an overview Features & points to be aware of, relevant to the observer. In addition to p2pp, there is FPOSS. Layout of FLAMES; link to GIRAFFE and UVES via Fiber Positioner; 2 interchangeable plates – when one is observing the other configures GIRAFFE: MEDUSA / IFU / ARGUS (on only one plate) UVES: higher resolution, typically brighter objects. Independent exposure times and number of exposures. Light loss if not same wavelength. T.Dall — FLAMES |

2 FLAMES Telescope guide star (9 ≤ R ≤ 11) FACB stars, 3-4 needed
Object fiber A typical field… FPOSS software to help place the fibers. Astrometry very important, better than 0.3” – FACBs must be in same astrometric system. GS/FACBs must be good choices. guiding on setup wavelength of GIRAFFE – careful if UVES has different setup sky fibers (assigned as you wish) Sky fiber T.Dall — FLAMES |

3 FPS-to-object translation in the header
Calibration fibers Object & sky fibers Data format. Calibration fibers available (not shown on the sky…) Pipeline for the reduction of data. T.Dall — FLAMES |
