Describe the apposable thumbs:
Warm up Describe the apposable thumbs: Characteristics Uses advantages
2
Apposable Thumb The thumb, unlike other fingers, is opposable, in that it is the only digit on the human hand which is able to oppose or turn back against the other four fingers, and thus enables the hand to refine its grip to hold objects which it would be unable to do otherwise. The opposable thumb has helped the human species develop more accurate fine motor skills. It is also thought to have directly led to the development of tools, not just in humans or their evolutionary ancestors, but other primates as well

Information table on animals using printed materials on life stages of animals Length of pregnancy Get food Completely mobile Sexually mature Humans
6
Read “On Being Human” (pp 92-95)

Exit ticket Write 2 paragraphs of what it’s like to be human with respect to other primates using what you have learned so far.

By comparing humans to other species
By comparing humans to other species. Compare how humans move and use their bodies with how other primates do the same thing. Specific emphasis is placed on the opposable thumb. Brain comparisons are also made between different organisms. Finally, students develop something to demonstrate what it means to be human, biologically. Emphasis is on biological characteristics, such as length of pregnancy, how they get food, mobility, and age at sexual maturity to name a few
