1 What is the difference between DNA and a gene?
Word of the Day: vertigo (‘ver te go) (noun) - a feeling of dizziness caused especially by being in a very high place Thinking about being on the edge of a cliff or on the roof of a tall building and looking straight down, gives Lisa a feeling of vertigo. What is the difference between DNA and a gene? Turn in your lab reports to the front table!

2 Review Time! What is DNA? What does DNA do?

3 DNA DNA stands for deoxyribose nucleic acid
It is a molecule that codes for our traits It is found in the nucleus of every cell Sequences of DNA make up our genes

4

5 How much DNA do we have? Humans have about 3 billion base pairs
These 3 billion base pairs code for about 24,000 genes

6 DNA’s Code DNA has four nitrogen bases
Adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine The combination of the four bases is what creates our unique DNA sequence Every person’s DNA sequence is unique to them

7 Nitrogen bases in DNA DNA has four different nitrogen bases (two purines and two pyrimidines). The nitrogen bases are: A is for Adenine G is for Guanine C is for Cytosine T is for Thymine Adenine and Guanine are purines. Cytosine and Thymine are pyrimidines.

9 Nitrogen bases in DNA

10 DNA? Genes? Chromosomes? Sequences of DNA make up our genes. These genes determine our traits. Chromosomes are structures in our cells that are made up of long sequences of DNA and multiple genes

11

12 James Watson and Francis Crick
Two scientists, Watson and Crick, discovered the structure of DNA and published an article about it in They didn’t work alone though!

13 Rosalind Franklin Rosalind Franklin was a female scientist working with DNA. She took a x-ray crystallographic of DNA which revealed its structure in 1952. From her photo, Watson and Crick saw that DNA was a double-helix.

14 Rosalind’s x-ray crystallographic

15 Fred Griffith His experiment was one of the first that showed that bacteria were able to transmit genetic information

16 Hershey and Chase Their experiments helped prove that DNA was the genetic material in cells.

17 Exit Ticket Rank the following in order of smallest to largest
DNA, Chromosome, Gene, Protein
