THE LAND The United Kingdom is the union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is the union of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The capital of England is London; the capital of Scotland is Edinburgh; the capital of Wales is Cardiff; the capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast. The capital of the U.K is London. London is in the south-east of the country, on the River Thames.

Londinium was founded by the Romans around 43 A.D. During the last decades of the first century, Londinium had expanded rapidly and quickly became the largest Roman town in Britain. During the second century, Londinium was at its peak. At one point, shortly after, a huge fire destroyed much of the city. The Union Jack The Union Jack is the national flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The origins of the first flag of Great Britain dates back to The current design of the Union Jack flag goes back to 1801 when there was the union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The flag combines aspects of three national flags: the red cross of Saint George of the Kingdom of England, the white saltire of St Andrew for Scotland and St. Patrick's cross to represent Ireland.

Tower Bridge The most famous bridge in London. Its main feature is that it opens when big ships have to pass. Tower Bridge has stood over the River Thames in London since 1894 and is one of the finest, most recognizable bridges in the World. It used to be raised about 50 times a day, but nowadays it is only raised 4 to 5 times a week. Tower Bridge is 60 meters long with towers that rise to a height of 43 meters. You can take the District line of the tube to get there.

Trafalgar Square Trafalgar Square is the main square in Central London, commemorating the famous Victory of Admiral Nelson in the Battle of Trafalgar in There are famous buildings including the National Gallery, St. Martin- in the Fields and Nelson's Column. This Square is very popular with visitors, who relax by the fountains and feed the pigeons.

Hyde Park Hyde Park is the most prominent and famous London Park and London's largest open space. It was once part of a wild and ancient forest, inhabited by wolves, wild bulls and boars. In 1536, King Henry VIII transformed the area, previously owned by the monks of Westminster, into a deer park. Queen Catherine built the internal artificial lake known as the Serpentine that Londoners use for boating, sailing and even bathing. The famous Speakers Corner, is part of the park.

Westminster Palace The Palace of Westminster, known also as the Houses of Parliament or just Westminster, is where the two Houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom conduct their sittings. It is the place where laws governing the British life are debated and passed. From the middle of the 11th century until 1512 the Palace of Westminster was the royal home to the Kings and Queens of England. The modern Palace of Westminster is the largest Gothic building in the world - there are over 1,000 rooms and two miles of corridors in it. The Palace of Westminster contains the bell Big Ben.

The British Museum This is one of the biggest museums in the world. It is 250 years old and six million people visit it every year. It's got collections of objects from every continent in the world. They tell us the story of human culture. Lots of teenagers say their favourite place is The Ancient Egypt galleries. They go there to see the mummies. You can meet a mummy called "Ginger"; Ginger's got red hair and he is 5400 years old! And meet Nesperennub. He's a mummy, too. But he's only 2900 years old. He's inside a beautiful coffin and you can see inside; a special computer helps you see his face!

Harrods Harrods is a very famous department store in Knightsbridge in the centre of London. It's a top shopping attraction-over 15 milion people visit the store every year! Lots of people visit Harrods, but you need lots of money to shop there! Harrods is very expensive and very exclusive. Harrods is enormous. There are seven floors and sixty window displays! It has over 330 departments for clothes, electronics, jewellery, sport, furniture, toys, and pets! Harrods has got a dress code for its visitors. For example, you can't wear shorts or a tracksuit in the shop. People say you can buy everything at Harrods from a pin to an elephant. The Harrods motto is Omnia Omnibus Ubique-All Things for all People, Everywhere.
