Naming with Transition
2
Transition Elements Called transition elements because they can make more than one ion. They are all metals so all are (+) ions Need some way to show which ion is involved in the compound
3
Writing Formulas The roman numeral in the name gives the charge of the ion Rules for naming: Write the symbol for the cation. Write the symbol for the anion. Flip the charges (w/out the + or-) Reduce if possible. Copper II chloride Manganese III phosphide
4
Naming Compounds Rules: Name the cation.
Name the anion. Changing the ending to –ide. Find the charge of the cation and record as a roman numeral after the name of the cation. CuF2 Cr2O5
5
Polyatomic Ions Group of atoms covalently bonded together that act as a single ion. When naming do not change the ending to –ide. Can be used with main group elements or transition elements.
6
Examples K3PO4 Mn(NO3)2 CaCO3 Zinc II phosphate Vandaium V sulfate
Strontium phosphate
