AIM: Phases of the Moon Aim: Earth and moon interactions Do Now:
Why do celestial objects “Appear” to move? -Because the Earth rotates
2
I. The Moon The moon is Earths only natural satellite.
The moon orbits around the Earth in 27.3 days.
3
Why is this just a theory?
II. Moon Origin Theory Collision Theory: A large object hit Earth, ejecting millions of tons of material which formed into our moon. Why is this just a theory?
4
III. Phases of the Moon results from the revolution of the moon and the sunlight that is reflected. Waxing – an increasing of the lit portion (from the right). Waning – a decreasing of the lit portion (from the right). Half of the moon is always lit by the sun, but the portion we see depends on your perspective.
6
IV. Eclipses (named for what is being blocked)
Solar Eclipse: The moon blocks a portion of the Sun and casts a shadow on Earth.
7
View of moons shadow on Earth from space
View of the Sun blocked by the moon from Earth
8
Lunar Eclipse: The moon moves into Earths shadow.
9
V. Ocean Tides Caused by the gravitational attraction between the Earth and moon as well as the sun. *During full or new moon phases
