1 Some Operator Requirements on Management
March 2005 doc.: IEEE /0169r0 March 2005 Some Operator Requirements on Management Date: Authors: Notice: This document has been prepared to assist IEEE It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). The material in this document is subject to change in form and content after further study. The contributor(s) reserve(s) the right to add, amend or withdraw material contained herein. Release: The contributor grants a free, irrevocable license to the IEEE to incorporate material contained in this contribution, and any modifications thereof, in the creation of an IEEE Standards publication; to copyright in the IEEE’s name any IEEE Standards publication even though it may include portions of this contribution; and at the IEEE’s sole discretion to permit others to reproduce in whole or in part the resulting IEEE Standards publication. The contributor also acknowledges and accepts that this contribution may be made public by IEEE Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures < ieee802.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf>, including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE Working Group. If you have questions, contact the IEEE Patent Committee Administrator at Lars Falk, TeliaSonera Lars Falk, TeliaSonera

2 Introduction Requirements on the following issues will be presented:
March 2005 Introduction Requirements on the following issues will be presented: Multiple SSIDs Switch of channel and/or AP Transmit Power Control Network selection Fake SSIDs Lars Falk, TeliaSonera

3 Multiple SSIDs that are not broadcasted
March 2005 Multiple SSIDs that are not broadcasted For a multiple SSID solution to be interoperable it is required that a unique SSID is broadcasted together with a unique BSSID in separate beacons Not broadcasted SSIDs can be obtained via active scanning (i.e. the STA asks the AP if it supports a certain SSID) When roaming, the list of preferred SSIDs can be rather long Requirement: It should be possible to inform a STA about not broadcasted SSIDs without letting the STA probe for each preferred SSID Lars Falk, TeliaSonera

4 Switch of channel and/or AP
March 2005 Switch of channel and/or AP Sometimes it is better if a STA changes its association to another AP and/or channel, e.g. for avoiding interference or uneven load on different APs in high load situations Requirement: It should be possible to order the STA to switch channel and/or AP Lars Falk, TeliaSonera

5 Transmit Power Control
March 2005 Transmit Power Control A STA should not use higher power level than necessary in order to avoid causing interference and not to waste battery power Requirement: It should be possible to order the STA to use a certain transmit power level Lars Falk, TeliaSonera

6 March 2005 Network selection When there are multiple SSIDs to choose from (either from one AP or several APs) how will the STA decide on which to choose? Requirement: It should be possible to provide the STA with information helping in deciding which network to associate with Note 1: Interesting proposal from Airespace (11-05/1595) in WNG at March meeting Note 2: Issue is being discussed also within TGu Note 3: One solution would be to let the operator push out a preference list Lars Falk, TeliaSonera

7 March 2005 Fake SSIDs Today it is possible for anybody to put up an AP using the same SSID(s) as established operators How can a STA know whether it is not a fake AP before association and authentication using e.g. 11i mechanisms? Requirement: it should be possible to distinguish between real and fake SSIDs Lars Falk, TeliaSonera
