Open data for more effective grantmaking
Introduce ourselves. 360G is a new initiative. Great to be here – looking forward to hearing how open grants data can support your work. 3 core focus areas: work with orgs to publish data openly; develop tools & platforms that use it; use the info for more informed decision-making and learning. Open data for more effective grantmaking
2
What we do We support grantmakers to publish their grants data openly, to understand their data and to use the data as part of a more innovative and informed approach to grantmaking. We support orgs to publish their grant data and understand and use it to support decision-making. 3 core components to what we do: Outreach & Engagement (speaking to grantmakers about how open data can support their work); supporting organisations with Publication of Open Data using the open data standard we have developed; Innovation and Use (so we know that the information is both useful and used). Supported by a tech team that provides pro bono advice and support on publishing data – there is no charge or fee to take part.

4
Simple standardisation - thousands of uses
Why standardise? So you’re comparing apples with apples.
5
Imagine if it was as easy as this
Coastal communities? Want to create a one-stop-shop where donors and charities can get accurate, useful information to power more effective grantmaking. Where funds are matched to projects based on the best available information. Where donors and beneficiaries can learn from failure and success.
6
Publishing data to 360 standard
Worked with data from 30 funders and published over 184,000 grant records. Now over £8bn worth of grants published to 360 Standard. Built a registry to support discovery of the data and supporting development of tools to encourage access and use. Planning data use pilots in 2017 focusing on specific sectors/regions.
7
People using the data Other people are using the data too. This map was created during a hack – using 360 data and free mapping software. Easy for anyone to start testing the data – keen to work with people who have questions they want to answer, and knowledge of a sector or region.
8
People using the data As the number of publishers grows, so will demand for the data. Already started but we want to stimulate this more by setting up 360Giving Labs – development of products, prototypes and research.
9
GrantNav: search open data
GrantNav is a tool that we’ve developed, with input from grantmakers (including some of you) going into its design and testing. Want to demonstrate GrantNav as its a good way of seeing the data in action. We’re keen for people to use the tool, share with their contacts, and let us know what you think. People using the data is a big incentive for grantmakers to become involved, for republishing, and improving the data and using it themselves. Key functions Search by key words Filter results Explore funders and recipients See grants by geographic area View a single grant Download data

Next steps Get more data published
Test the usefulness through data pilots and a “challenge fund” Different stakeholders start using the data – how would you use the information? Need good quality, timely data to make it truly useful. This is our biggest challenge, and the key to the sustainability of the initiative. Publishers who find the data is useful to their decision-making and can see the benefits for their current and potential grantees are more motivated to update regularly – a virtuous circle that builds a movement. Alongside getting more grantmakers to become publishers we want to know how you’d use this information. Alongside more publishers we also need more people who want to ask questions of the data – what your current constraints/frustrations are and how can this information support your work. By working together we can test that the data is fit for a range of users and uses.

London & 360Giving data 21,252 grants to London £2.27bn since 1998
Benefiting London? Only 11% have beneficiary info Linking other datasets indicates 35% of grants benefit London. 24 orgs funded orgs based in London. 7,546 grants where data indicates benefiting London. Still means 12.5k where can’t say.
