A word that shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in the sentence.

7. Prepositional Phrases
A preposition is always part of a group of words called a
PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE
- Prepositional Phrases begin with a Preposition
- They end with a noun or pronoun called the
OBJECT OF THE PREPOSITION
Example: Mary missed the train by two minutes.
The birds flew between the old fenceposts.

8. Preposition or Adverb?
The same word can be a preposition in one sentence and an adverb in another.
Just remember….
-A preposition is always part of a phrase:
Below the stairs is extra storage.
-An adverb always stands alone: The sailor climbed below.

10. Watch Out!
If you see the word “to” it does not always signal a prepositional phrase.
