6 A preposition is… A word that shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in the sentence.

7 Prepositional Phrases
A preposition is always part of a group of words called a PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE - Prepositional Phrases begin with a Preposition - They end with a noun or pronoun called the OBJECT OF THE PREPOSITION Example: Mary missed the train by two minutes. The birds flew between the old fenceposts.

8 Preposition or Adverb? The same word can be a preposition in one sentence and an adverb in another. Just remember…. -A preposition is always part of a phrase: Below the stairs is extra storage. -An adverb always stands alone: The sailor climbed below.

9 Try Some! Copy each sentence.Underline the prepositional phrases in the following sentences. Place a box around the object of the preposition. 1. Grandma lives over the river and through the woods. 2. After school we will go play baseball. 3. I see the money between the cracks. 4. On my way home after the game I’ll pick up some milk. 5. The tree fell to the ground.

10 Watch Out! If you see the word “to” it does not always signal a prepositional phrase.
