7. Coastal Prairie Plants
1. Andropogon gerardii- Big bluestem
Primary and dominant grass in this type, defines the true
prairie; decreaser, excellent forage during summer when
actively growing. Does not cure out well in winter, coarse and
fibrous when mature - can feed to yearling cattle at this stage.
Has distinctive red color as it cures out.
2. Schizachyrium scoparium- Little bluestem
Primary bunch grass found here, codominant with big
bluestem; decreaser, very palatable in summer. Does not cure
well for winter use. Like big bluestem has distinctive red color as
it cures out.

3. Paspalum sp. – Dallis grass
Invader I; tall growing (up to 1 m) and warm season
plant; good livestock plant; fair value for wildlife.
Grows primarily in wet areas
4. Celtis sp.- Spiny hackberry
Increaser I or II; has no forage value for livestock; good
wildlife plant for cover and food
