2
BONDS! Bonds occur with metals & nonmetals. Ionic Shares electrons
Gives or takes Electrons. Covalent EX: MgO Mg=metal O=nonmetal Nonmetallic Elements Bonding! EX: P2O5
3
Most of the time 2 atoms are present EX: HCL ACID!
4
Acids: Ternary and Binary
By: Sheila Gonzalez
5
Binary Acids Binary acids contain hydrogen and a nonmetallic acid.
These acids contain NO oxygen The names of binary acids do not tell how many hydrogen atoms are in the formula. Those are told by the valence of the other element.
6
Naming Binary Acids Examples: Name a binary acid following this example: hydroelementic acid. The “element” is replaced by the root of the name of the element. HF Hydrofluoric acid H2S Hydrosulfuric acid HBr Hydrobromic acid
7
Ternary Acids (Oxy-acids)
Ternary acids are also known as “Oxy-acids. Contain hydrogen and oxygen and one other (usually) nonmetallic element. These acids contain both hydrogen and oxygen but their names make no reference to either hydrogen or oxygen.
8
Naming Ternary Acids H2SO4 Sulfuric acid HClO3 Chloric acid H2CO3
Chromic acid H2SO3 Sulfurous acid Name a ternary acid following this example: elementic acid. Some also follow this example: elementous acid. An elementous acid has less oxygen than an elementic acid. The “element” is replaced by the root of the name of the element.
9
Review Binary acids do not contain oxygen, only hydrogen and one other nonmetallic element. When naming binary acids follow hydroelementic acid. Ternary acids contain both hydrogen and oxygen. When naming ternary acids follow elementic acid or elementous acid. In ternary acids, “ous” has less oxygen than “ic”

Naming Ionic Compounds: Binary, Ternary, and Covalent
By: Janet Rodriguez & Manuela Hernandez
11
Naming Ternary Ionic Formulas
Simple Ternary ionic compounds contain only a kind of metal cation. First word- Complete name of less electronegative element. Second word- consists of stem with an –ate, or and ite suffix. Either prefix -per or –hypo. EX:K2SO4 …Potassium Sulfate
12
Ternary Ionic Compounds
Examples: PbSO4 lead (II) sulfate The charge on sulfate is a 2-, therefore the charge on the lead must be a 2+.
13
Ionic Binary Compounds
1. The First element in the formula is always named first, using the entire element name. 2. The second element in the formula is named using the root of the element and adding the suffix –ide. 3.Prefixes are used 2 indicate the # of atoms of each type that are present in the compound. ******In the first element in the formula never uses the prefix MONO!!! Ex: CO – Carbon Monoxide…. Not Monocarbon Monoxide!!!
14
Covalent Compounds Covalent is a nonmetal + nonmetal
The first element in the formula is always named first using the entire element name. The second one in the formula uses only the root and the suffix (i.e. ide) Prefixes used are to indicate the numbers of atoms. Example: PH3 NAME THIS TOO:………………………………..
15
Prefixes for Ionic: Binary
mono –1 di – 2 tri –3 tetra – 4 penta -- 5 hexa – 6 hepta – 7 octa– 8 nona– 9 deca-- 10
