2 What is the MEC? Established in 1988 to support the academic success and personal development of historically underrepresented students on campus Aim to promote diversity on our campus through: Community engagement and programming Social justice  Back in the 1980’s, data showed that only 35% of Black students graduated in five years or less and 45% of Hispanic students did so. Students of color often transitioned from small school environments to this large university making it easy for them to feel lost.  Realizing that students needed a bridge to succeed, the MEC was created.

4 What We Do Provide leadership development through personal growth opportunities including social justice education and programming Support the academic mission of the university Assist with recruitment and retention of high achieving, but historically underrepresented communities Collaborate with various offices and administrators to facilitate student success initiatives

5 MEC Services Academic Support- Tutoring and Academic Advising
Courses: Accounting, Economics, Finance, and Calculus Contact Malik Crowder for more information about academic advising. Drop In Consultation/Conversation with CMHC Partnership between CMHC and MEC to foster support, conversation, and care at the intersections of mental health, social justice, and diversity. Social Justice Lending Library Our lending library is available to all students who want to learn more about issues of social justice, race, class, power, privilege, etc. Come browse and check out a book. Books classified via ethnic and thematic categories. 

6 MEC Services Community Outreach
The MEC conducts Students of Color Q&A panels aimed at incoming and prospective students visiting UT. Share your college experience with high school students! We're always looking for dedicated volunteers to participate all year round. Cultural Competency Workshops We provide workshops on cultural competency and other issues. If your group/organization is interested in staff or peer-facilitated workshops, let us know how we can help. For more information, Event Planning Services Need help implementing your vision for a program, workshop, event? MEC program coordinators can help! Visit us to help you brainstorm and find donors for, create a plan to execute and assess the impact of your program. 

7 Our Agencies The MEC contains these six different student agencies; as you can tell from the titles, each agency focuses their work catering to a specific community here on campus. Of course, any event/program created by these agencies are open to any UT student whether they identify with the hosting agency or not.
