Central to poetry Form dates to 3rd century B.C., when the Greek poet Theocritus wrote his Idylls Refers to a literary work dealing with shepherds and rustic life Based on Arcadian region of ancient Greece Roman poets also wrote Pastorals

4 Pastorals Continued Form presented idealized view of country life
Subject matter included love, politics, corruption, critiques of society and more Safe way to criticize people in power Form almost dies out during industrial revolution No set rhyme scheme Shakespeare used it in ‘Love’s Labor’s Lost’

Elegy: a poem lamenting the loss of a friend etc. (we will be studying this next)

7 Compare/Contrast Compare the similarities and differences between the poem and the photograph. Answer the following in a short 1 paragraph response. How well do they match up and why? How do they both present strong sensory details? Which one does a better job of describing the oncoming storm and why?

9 Ticket Out The Door What similarities and differences do you see between Haiku poetry and Pastoral Poetry? Make sure you annotate all three poems. Do not hand in your paper or poems until everything is completed. Your character bottle is due Tuesday, and the LAST day to turn in any missing work is THURSDAY!
