1 Lesson Objective: You will be able to use mass and volume to calculate the density of an object.

2 Density: Density = Mass ÷ volume D = M V Measure in g/cm3 or g/mL

3 Density Formula Mass Density Volume Mass = Density x Volume
Density = Mass Volume Volume = Mass Density Density Volume

4 What exactly is a “cm3”? Height = 1 cm Width = 1 cm Length = 1 cm

5 If an object’s density is 10 g/cm3, then each cubic centimeter has a mass of 10 grams!
Mr. Cm3 I have a mass of 10 grams!

6

7

8 It is called a “triple” beam balance because it uses three levers to find the mass.

9 It gives you the mass when it is “balanced”, when the line on the lever matches with the “zero mark”.

10

11 What is the mass of this object?

12 200 grams + 70 grams + 2 grams = 272 grams

13 How much mass does this object have?

14 500 grams + 10 grams + 5 grams = 515 grams

15 Scales: A scale is much easier!
You simply place an object on it and it will tell you its mass in grams! I have a mass of 51 grams!

16 How much mass does JUST the water have?

17 155 grams (Water + Beaker) -51 grams (Beaker) 104 grams (Water)

18

19 Volume: All of these tools measure volume, in milliliters.
Volume is how much space something takes up.

20

21

22

23 How could you use this graduated cylinder to find the volume of the object?

24 Volume of Water and Object – Volume of Water = Volume of Object

25 65 ml – 45 ml = 20 ml 65 ml 45 ml

26 The Guess Method Strategy
G – Given U – Unknown E – Equation S – Substitution S – Solve

27 What is the density of an object with a mass of 200 grams and a volume of 25 cm3?

28 What is the density of an object with a mass of 200 grams and a volume of 25 cm3?
M = 200 g V = 25 cm3 Density D = M V D = 200g 25 cm3 D = 8g/cm3

29 What is the density of a 250g barrel that has a volume of 10cm3?

30 What is the density of a 250g barrel that has a volume of 10cm3?
M = 250g V = 10 cm3 Density D = M V D = 250g 10cm3 D = 25g/cm3

31 An object has a mass of 78 grams and a volume of 3 cm3
An object has a mass of 78 grams and a volume of 3 cm3. What is its density?

32 An object has a mass of 78 grams and a volume of 3 cm3
An object has a mass of 78 grams and a volume of 3 cm3. What is its density? M = 78g V = 3 cm3 Density D = M V D = 78g 3cm3 D = 26g/cm3
