1 Rhetorical Appeals: The Art of Persuasion

2 Rhetoric is the art of persuasion.
There are three appeals used to persuade:

3 1. Logos An argument based on facts, evidence, and reason
Appeals to a reader’s sense of what is logical

4 2. Ethos An argument based on ethics (credibility).
The writer or speaker presents him or herself as credible, trustworthy, ethical, or honest.

5 3. Pathos An argument that appeals to the audience’s emotions and feelings.

6 An effective argument uses all 3 appeals.

14 Assignment On the back of your Rhetoric appeals notes, write a short argument about the following topics using ALL THREE APPEALS (this is just practice so for logos and ethos, you can be creative and make it up, but in a real argument you have to use FACTUAL INFORMATION). Why people like to watch cat videos. What your dog is really thinking. Where all the mismatched socks go.
