2 Efforts at Peace Nov 1977: Anwar Sadat stunned the world by extending a hand to Israel Sadat went before the Knesset (Israeli parliament) to join in a quest of peace Sadat emphasized that in exchange for peace, Israel would have to recognize the rights of Palestinians 1978: Carter invited Sadat & Israeli PM Menachem Begin to Camp David Carter announced that Egypt recognized Israel as a legitimate state Israel agreed to return Sinai Peninsula to Egypt Known as Camp David Accords 1981: Muslim extremists assassinated Sadat 2

3 Israeli Palestinian Tensions Increase
Palestinians continued to clash with the Israeli’s 1970’s-1980’s, military wing of the PLO conducted a campaign against Israel Israel responded by bombing suspected rebel bases in Palestinian towns 1987: Palestinians expressed themselves in civil disobedience campaign (Intifada “Uprising”) Took form of boycotts, demonstrations, attacks on Israeli soldiers Continued into 1990’s World put pressure on Israel to seek negotiations Oct 1991, Israeli & Palestinian delegates met for a series of peace talks 3

4 The Oslo Peace Accords 1993: Secret talks held in Oslo, Norway that produced agreement Called Declaration of Principles or The Oslo Peace Accords Under Israeli PM Yitzhak Rabin, Israel agreed to grant the Palestinians self-rule in the Gaza Strip & the West Bank Difficulty of making the agreement work was demonstrated by the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin in 1995 Killed by a right-wing Jewish extremist 4
