Particle Physics What has it done for me? M.C.
2
Any benefits? Are there any benefits to mankind from studying particle physics apart from just gaining knowledge? Yes, there are an incredible amount of benefits already available and the promise of a lot more on the way! PDST Resources for Leaving Certificate Physics 2

How have we benefitted so far?
The most obvious benefit has been the invention of the world wide web (WWW) and the development of that into what is now called the Internet. Scientists needed to exchange data and information quickly all around the world from all of the collisions happening in the accelerators to do this they invented the web. Other benefits What other benefits are flowing to the world?
Particle physicists have had to develop more efficient fridges to allow the superconducting magnets to function; these fridges are used by the space program to liquefy oxygen. PDST Resources for Leaving Certificate Physics 4
5
Any other benefits? Yes, particle physicists have developed highly sensitive infra red camera that are used in night vision detectors studying pollution in the atmosphere and satellite imaging PDST Resources for Leaving Certificate Physics 5

Even more benefits? Yes one of the most exciting benefits of particle physics is the neutron element transmuter; this is a device that can use the accelerated protons to release neutrons from atoms These neutrons can be absorbed by harmful radioactive substances changing them into harmless isotopes. The problem of storing radioactive waste is huge for nuclear powered countries. PDST Resources for Leaving Certificate Physics 6

Any health benefits Today over half of the worlds accelerators, developed by particle physicists, are used in medicine. The particle detector technology developed by particle physicists is used in PET scanners found in hospitals. The PET scanner itself uses antimatter (positrons ). MRI Also the research done on superconductivity helped developed the MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) scanner. These are widely available in all hospitals today PDST Resources for Leaving Certificate Physics 8
