King Louis XIV King of France in 1663 Took control of New France
Introduced the same model of government in his colony as in France

Government System in New France
The SOVEREIGN COUNCIL was in charge. It was made up of: the governor general the intendant representative of the bishop and councillors

Sovereign council functioned as a court of appeal
it administered justice (according to the Custom of Paris)

Governor general Intendant represented the king
responsible for external affairs (diplomacy) Intendant responsible for internal affairs (finance, police, settlement, etc)

Once again, the main goals of the King and the government of New France were:
settle the colony obtain resources

Jean Talon Jean Talon was appointed intendant
Arrived in New France in 1665 An initial goal: protect the colony established peace with the Iroquois nations in 1667

next goal: increase the population accomplished this by:
granting land to engagés (workers) & soldiers sending the Filles du Roy

Filles du Roy young French women (orphans or beggars) payed to come over and marry colonists 770 Filles du Roy came over during 10 year span… had more than 4000 children!

Rewards ($) were given to:
couples getting married at a young age couples that had a lot of kids There were penalties for young men who did not get married. (weren’t allowed to hunt, fish, or trade with Native Americans)

Expanding territories
Lots of exploratory expeditions took place between 1671 and 1743. See document 47 on page 88
