4. Economic Challenges
Inflation during the 1970s due to rising cost of oil
Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) placed an embargo on oil to the US

5. Neoconservatism Argued Nation’s morals were slipping since the 1960s
Moral Majority, 1979 by Jerry Falwell. Fundamentalist Christian organization. Wanted a return to family values
Believed government social programs did more harm than good. Believed in less government and lower taxes
Opposed gay rights, abortion, and feminism

6. Reaganomics AKA, supply-side economics
Believed in cutting taxes, reduce size of government, and control over business (deregulation)
Idea was to put more money in the pockets of Americans and Businesses so they would purchase more
Tax Cuts led to decrease in Federal programs (Great Society, student loans, job training, and mass transportation)
However, defense spending was increased, US exports were falling, did not help the poor.
1983, the economy started to get better but crashed in High-profile investors faced charges of manipulating funds in illegal ways
Rural and Urban poor suffered the most. Most jobs added were low-p[aying service work

13. Demographic Shifts
Sun Belt- Americans moved from the north to the south. Southern states became more business friendly and had lower taxes. Factories in the north moved overseas
Increased immigration from Latin America (Before 1960s, most immigrants came from Europe)
Mariel Boat Lift-125,000 Cubans moved to Florida
Violence and turmoil led to an increase in migration from Central America
Asians- “Model Immigrant” skilled and well educated

14. Immigration
Immigration and Nationality Act (1965)-Immigration policy allowed for skilled and educated individuals
Refugee Act (1980)-Defined a refugee. Can increase # based on emergencies
Immigration Reform and Control Act (1986)- crime for employees to hire or recruit illegal immigrants
Immigration Act- increased number of immigrants allowed each year
USA Patriot Act- restricted individuals who might be terrorists
2006- Protests against legislation making living in the country illegally a felon
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (2012)- Anyone who came to the US before 16 exempt from deportation and eligible for a renewable work permit
