1 Teacher Guide This lesson is designed to teach kids to ask a critical thinking question that you can’t just put into a search box to solve. To do that, we encourage them with smaller questions that search can help them answer. Make sure that you read the notes for each slide: they not only give you teaching tips but also provide answers and hints so you can help the kids if they are having trouble. Remember, you can always send feedback to the Bing in the Classroom team at You can learn more about the program at bing.com/classroom and follow the daily lessons on our Partners In Learning site. Want to extend today’s lesson? Consider using Skype in the Classroom to arrange for your class to chat with another class in today’s location. And if you are using Windows 8, you can also use the Bing apps to learn more about this location and topic; the Travel and News apps in particular make great teaching tools. Nell Bang-Jensen is a teacher and theater artist living in Philadelphia, PA. Her passion for arts education has led her to a variety of roles including developing curriculum for Philadelphia Young Playwrights and teaching at numerous theaters and schools around the city. She works with playwrights from ages four to ninety on developing new work and is especially interested in alternative literacies and theater for social change. A graduate of Swarthmore College, she currently works in the Artistic Department of the Wilma Theater and, in addition to teaching, is a freelance actor and dramaturg. In 2011, Nell was named a Thomas J. Watson Fellow and spent her fellowship year traveling to seven countries studying how people get their names. This lesson is designed to teach the Common Core State Standard: Reading: Informational Text CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.3 Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.5 Use text features and search tools (e.g., key words, sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate information relevant to a given topic efficiently. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.7 Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur). CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.9 Compare and contrast the most important points and key details presented in two texts on the same topic.

What is a province and why don’t we have them in the United States? © Sungjin Kim/500px Having this up as kids come in is a great settle down activity. You can start class by asking them for thoughts about the picture or about ideas on how they could solve the question of the day.

Chungjuho Lake can be found in North Chungcheong Province. What is a province and why don’t we have them in the United States? Danyang County sits on the edge of Chungjuho Lake in North Chungcheong Province. Most of the surrounding terrain is rugged mountains with various rivers and creeks running though. The terrain makes Danyang a popular place for adventure-seekers to enjoy anything from simple hikes to white water rafting or paragliding from the hills toward town. Depending on time, you can either have students read this silently to themselves, have one of them read out loud, or read it out loud yourself.

What county is it in? What province? What region? What country? How would you answer these questions to describe your own location? 2 What is the definition of a province? What is the definition of a state? How are these definitions similar or different? 3 Map Search In North America, the United States has states, but Canada has provinces. Look at these two countries on a map. Can you tell that they are divided differently? Why or why not? 4 How were states created in the history of the United States? How were provinces created in the history of South Korea? 5 What are three countries that have provinces? Three countries that have states? Why is there this difference? There are a couple of ways to use this slide, depending on how much technology you have in your classroom. You can have students find answers on their own, divide them into teams to have them do all the questions competitively, or have each team find the answer to a different question and then come back together. If you’re doing teams, it is often wise to assign them roles (one person typing, one person who is in charge of sharing back the answer, etc.)

If a group isn’t able to answer in 5 minutes, you can give them the opportunity to update at the end of class or extend time.

This way, you also have a record that you can keep as a class and share with parents, others.

What county is it in? What province? What region? What country? How would you answer these questions to describe your own location? (Possible queries: “location of Chungjuho Lake”, “where is Chungjuho Lake?”, “where is Danyang County?”). From and Chungjohu Lake can be found in Danyang County, in North Chungcheong Province in the Hoseo region of South Korea. Students should then answer these same questions for their own locations. Answers will vary. For example, a student in Philadelphia may describe their location as being in the county and city of Philadelphia, the state of Pennsylvania, the region of Mid-Atlantic States, and the country of the United States of America.

What is the definition of a state? How are these definitions similar or different? (Possible queries: “define: province”, “what is a province?”, “define: state”, “what is a state?”). “Define: State” from the Bing Search Bar: A state is an area forming part of a federal country such as the United States or Australia with its own government and legislature and control over most of its own internal affairs. “Define: Province” from the Bing Search Bar: A province is an administrative region or division of a country. Students should compare these definitions. In order to understand them, they may need to use the Bing Search Bar to search to define more terms. They should notice that both states and provinces are described as being parts of a whole with some of its own administration and government.

Can you tell that they are divided differently? Why or why not? (Possible queries: “Bing/Maps: Canada”, “Bing/Maps: United States”). Students should zoom in on these maps to get a sense of some various provinces and states. They should note that it’s impossible to tell, based on these border markings, the difference between a province and a state. All of the divisions between parts of the whole look the same. They might, however, notice that Canadian provinces tend to be bigger than American states, and that, as a result, there are fewer of them.

(Possible queries: “formation of states versus formation of provinces”, “formation of United States”, “creation of South Korean provinces”, “history South Korean provinces”). From http// In the case of United States, the circumstances were unique, in the sense, that states were formed first and they were actually independent in nature and agreed to exist as united in the form of a federation. Thus, we have United States of America, and the states here are more autonomous than states in any other country. From Provinces (Do) have been the primary administrative division of Korea since the mid Goryeo dynasty in the early 11th century, and were preceded by provincial-level divisions (Ju and Mok) dating back to Unitifed Silla, in the late 7th century. With the liberation of Korea in 1945, the Korean peninsula was divided into Northern Korea and Southern Korea under trusteeship from Soviet Union and America, with the dividing line established along the 38th parallel. As a result, three provinces—Hwanghae, Gyeonggi, and Gangwon were divided into North Korea and South Korea today. Between 1946 and 1954, five new provinces were created: Jeju in South Korea, and North and South Hwanghae, Chagang, and Ryanggang in North Korea. Since 1954, provincial boundaries in both the North and South have remained unchanged. New cities and special administrative regions have been created, however.

Three countries that have states? Why is there this difference? (Possible queries: “what countries besides the US have states?” ,“what countries have provinces?”, “difference between states and provinces”). From Answers will vary but countries with states may include Australia, Austria, Brazil, India, Germany, Malaysia and Sudan among others. From Answers will vary but countries with provinces may include Argentina, Congo, Spain and Italy, among others. From The exact relationship of a province or a state to its federal or central government would vary in form and structure from one country to another. For example, what is true of provinces in China are not necessarily true of provinces in Canada. Depending on the countries compared, there may be no differences between state organization and province structure at all.

Chungjuho Lake can be found in North Chungcheong Province. What is a province and why don’t we have them in the United States? This slide is a chance to summarize the information from the previous slides to build your final answer to the question. Students should pull together the information gathered to understand that we don’t have provinces in the United States because we divide up the country by states. Both states and provinces are smaller areas within a country that have some form of their own government but that also answer to the laws of a country as a whole. Students should understand that there is no major difference between states and provinces (and this difference is not evident on a map) and they are have formed according to that country’s history. For example, in the United States, a group of states joined together to form a federation, whereas in recent history, the whole of South Korea was divided into provinces.
