Year 6 SATs Parents Information Evening

What? Statutory Assessment Tests Compulsory for all year 6 pupils
Also take place in year 2 – less formal Introduced in 1994 New style from 2016 to link with New Curriculum

Formal tests in Reading, Maths & GPS (Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling).
Writing is assessed separately using teacher judgement, based on a range of evidence over time in lessons (final assessment at the end of June) Science: a small sample of schools are selected to sit tests

Why? Not qualifications – do not affect your child’s future options in school An opportunity to compare pupils nationally to ensure standards Used to measure schools’ performance A tool to help teachers identify pupils’ attainment and those needing additional support

When? Mon 14th May – GPS paper and spelling test
Tues 15th May – Reading paper Wed 16th May – Maths Arithmetic paper and Reasoning paper 1 Thurs 17th May – Maths Reasoning paper 2

8.40: Line up on the playground, go to class for register
8.45: ‘SATs dancing’ in Mapledurum Hall 9:00: Breakfast to provide a relaxed start to the day with friends 9:15: To class, start tests in classrooms After tests are finished – extended break Rest of the day – more relaxed Friday – introduce the play and treat

How? In classrooms (walls covered)
Permitted/required resources all provided At least 2 familiar adults in each room

Test conditions Children given clear time reminders School follows strict guidelines to ensure security and confidentiality Monitoring visits by LEA – 10% schools, most during week, some before/after

Extra time can be applied for Scribes/transcripts Readers Private rooms

English Paper 1: Spelling, punctuation, vocabulary and grammar - short answer questions (45 minutes)

Spurcroft’s approach:
It is important to us to provide our year 6 pupils with a varied, good quality and rich curriculum – we don’t teach to the test. We want to help children to feel prepared, relaxed and confident entering the tests, so that they know what to expect and have the best opportunity to show off their learning and achieve their potential.

How do we prepare children?
Coverage of curriculum throughout year From January – whole class test preparation sessions Group booster sessions Individual interventions Practice papers throughout the year

How can you help to prepare your child?
Positive encouragement and reassurance Sleep, relaxation, food Extra practice and support at home where needed – CGP revision guides (avoid past papers) Discuss with class teacher Easter – 10 for 10 activities for revision Avoid holidays during summer term – pre-SATs, during SATs and during writing assessment period

Results: School access 10th July
Opportunities for school to challenge marking Confirmed results included in pupil’s End of Year School Report mid July Teacher assessment for all subjects submitted to LEA in June and secondary schools along with test scores (writing assessment continues after SATs)

From 2016, outcomes no longer given as levels (eg. Level 4)
Scaled Scores: Calculated by comparing marks nationally Score of 100 = expected level for age Below 100 = ‘working towards’ expected level = ‘working at’ or secure 110 and above = working at ‘greater depth’
