Why should we train midwives on ultrasound
Doing ultrasound will improve access to service as stated in the maternity case guidelines that one ultrasound for a woman before pregnancy :
Severe shortage of Sonographers
Inline with the scope of practice of both basic and advanced
Who should be trained ? Should it be separate or included in the curriculum
Both Specialist and basic midwives , however to look at the extend to which they should be trained
Basic Midwives is part of orientation or introduction
Advanced Midwives could do basic ultrasound
Which training model
Different models identified within the country
Exploration should be done for a suitable model for SA
NB It should not be less than a year( load be more on practical part)
A short course accredited outside the formal curriculums as continuation from basic ultrasound done by ADMs( level 2 Scan) .( definition)
Diagnostic one must done by advanced midwives

How do we protect them from litigation
basic screening tool only not met to diagnose as per scope of practice and ICM
Define diagnostic screen : Screening tool with diagnosis of basic abnormalities for ADMs
Scope of midwives no specific on use of ultrasound therefore ,there is uncertainty .
Involve practitioner who are knowledgeable on legal matters
Implication of task shifting with ultrasound
Training should be accredited and of good quality to produce midwives of good quality
