The Nervous System Unit 3
2
The Nervous System Regulates body activity
We divide nerve structure of the body into two divisions… The Central & the Peripheral Systems The Nervous System
3
Central Nervous System
Brain and Spinal Cord a. Spinal reflexes B. Peripheral Nervous System 1. Nerve fibers running to and from the CNS 2. Two divisions: somatic and autonomic
4
CNS & PNS The CNS & PNS act as connecting and coordinating systems between sense organs, the muscles and the glands
6
Neuron (aka the Nerve Cell)
Nerve impulses travel across nerve cells called neurons Sensory neurons receive sensory info & take it back to the brain or spinal cord (think 5 senses) Motor Neurons conduct impulses from brain or spinal cord to muscles & glands
7
4. Neurons are made up of four parts: a
4. Neurons are made up of four parts: a. Dendrites receive nerve impulses b. Cell body contains neurons, chromosomes & genes, plus energy for activity c. Axon – fiber part that sends info to other neurons d. Synapse – point where two neurons meet
9
Discuss the differences between the Central Nervous System & the Peripheral Nervous System.
Draw a Neuron / Nerve Cell from memory only do not use your notes Table Talk
10
The Autonomic Nervous System
Part of the CNS and PNS that regulates activities of the vital organs We are normally unable to control digestion but sometimes can for a period of time breathing The Autonomic Nervous System
12
The Somatic Nervous System
Controls voluntary muscles and sense organs Transmits sensory messages to the CNS (touch, pain, temperature, etc.)
14
If we accidentally touch a hot pot on the stove, we immediately retract our hand, even before saying, “Ouch!” Discuss specifically what is involved in this behavior. Be sure to include the following: A description of reception and transmission of an impulse by a neuron The path of the reflex An explanation of why the hand is retracted before the exclamation is emitted QUICKWRITE
