Enlightenment…..what does it mean?
To learn, enlighten, discover A time when people questioned authority (like the Renaissance, Reformation, Sc Rev, Exploration) New laws, rights, ideas that helped PEOPLE not the rulers

Why are people “thinking differently again?”

Science…..that’s Why!!! Scientific Revolution has fueled these thoughts. Scientists and inventions helped people to understand natural laws. The Scientific Revolution helped strengthen the use of the power of human reasoning.

How do we know the government will “give us” these laws?

Through a contract, of course!!
Social Contract Social = Society, People, Humans Contract = agreement between/among people/gov’t/humans

Can’t we all just get along?
An agreement where the people give up certain rights to a gov't/ruler in exchange for protection & order in their lands/country/society. If the government fails to follow this contract, the people have a right to rebel/go against the contract/find a new government.

Natural Rights Life, Liberty, & the Pursuit of Happiness These are rights given to all human beings when born ("nature") They can’t be “taken away”

Philosophe "lovers of wisdom" thinkers of the Enlightenment
Believed that the use of reason could lead to reforms of government, law and society

Physiocrat These people look to natural laws to help understand an economic system

Laissez-faire Belief that the government should only be involved a little (or not all) in business and/or in people's lives

Salons Secretive social gatherings where writers, artists, philosophers and other thinkers exchanged ideas in secret locations. If found by gov't officials, many of the people could get in trouble, including the people organizing and running the event.

Started as poetry readings for the noble women
Middle class soon took part and ideas of the Enlightenment became the focus of the gatherings. These became the centers for all changes.

Arts Before the Enlightenment:
Based on Greek or Roman traditions (Baroque style) Large and colorful Very life-like, exuberant Glorified historic battles/wars or important people in power During the Enlightenment: Art started to focus on "regular people" not just leaders Rococo style - personal, elegant, charming Nature, flowers, "snapshots" of the moment
