Sentence Structure: Correcting fragments, misplaced modifiers, and incorrect pronouns

Fixing Fragments 1. Connect the fragment to an independent clause to complete the thought (make the sentence an ID or a D, I) Because Kelly was running late. She missed the bus. Whenever Madeline forgets to finish her homework. We have a pop quiz.

Fixing Fragments 2. If the fragment is missing a subject or complete verb, add one. Nico at Jewel last night. Got a job at the public library.

Fixing Fragments 3. Drop the words or phrases that make the sentence a fragment. Andrea missed the bus, was running late. CORRECT: Andrea missed the bus.

Fixing Fragments 4. Add a helping verb.
The little boy licking his ice cream. Jesus playing soccer with his friends. Giovanni run for mayor.

Misplaced and dangling modifiers
Can be a word, phrase, or clause Should appear before or after the word that is being modified INCORRECT: After they had been sharpened, the teachers distributed the pencils.

Who vs which vs that Who is used for people
Which/that are used for things *Which is preferred when writing* How can you remember when to use who and when to use which? “Nobody likes to be called a witch.”

Who vs which The tomatoes from her garden, which grew larger than those in the grocery store, were sweet and ripe. Char-Li is the one which rescued the squirrel. That is a problem who cannot be solved using a calculator. Taylor, who is a cheerleader, is also a softball player. The Senator’s campaign is the one which stands out amongst all the others.

Whom: objects/prepositions/object pronouns CORRECT: Whom did you call? (NOT “Who did you call?”)

Who vs Whom, Part 2 Example: Always remember who you’re speaking to.
1. Turn the sentence into a question. Who are you speaking to? 2. If the answer to the question is he, use who. 3. If the answer to the question is him, use whom. CORRECT: Always remember whom you’re speaking to.
