Dilemma In a collaboration one of the other group’s researchers insists in being noted as a co-author in one of your promising papers. You feel that he did not contribute at all, however he is responsible for a travel grant you intend to use in the future.

Introduction In a scientific publication, everyone of the authors should be aware and responsible for the whole text. Realistically not everyone can contribute equally.

Collaboration Scientific Community Public Enlist as co-author + better chance for travel grant - lie + authorship - bad conscience + good atmosphere +/- one more author -lie - tricked - inefficient allocation of resources + popularity - paying unnecessary people Don't enlist as co-author + honesty - worse chance for travel grant - conflict - no publication +/- one less author - conflict shines a bad light on community + better use of public money - less popularity Mention in acknowledgment +marginal reputation gain

Our solution Being inclusive does not hurt anyone in the immediate situation and was therefore chosen as our solution
