2. 27.2 America stretches its wings
* America purchases Alaska from Russia (2 cents per acre)
Rise of Expansionism:
America wanted to go through the world and get more land
This would give new opportunities and money
½ the country approved ½ did not
Expansion in Asia and the Pacific:
America wanted to have free trade with Asia
They took over the Midway Islands as a port for refueling

3. Annexing Hawaii:
Hawaii was ran by its own King and Queen
Sugar plantations were created by Americans who came there
US agreed to let Hawaii sugar to import into the US
US opened naval bases on Hawaii (Pearl Harbor)
US forced Queen Liliuokalani to step down
US claimed Hawaii

4. 27.3 a splendid little war Cubans Struggle for Independence:
Cubans were being mistreated by Spain when they tried to get their independence
US sent a naval ship to fight Spain (Maine)
The Spanish-American War:
The Maine was sunk by an explosion and 260 soldiers were killed
US sent more troops to fight Spain
They were going to get rid of Spain and let the people of Cuba run their country when it was over (Iraq War of Today)
US fought and captured San Juan Hill and after that the war was over
War lasted 4 months
345 soldiers died in the war
5,500 died of disease
US gave full control of Cuba to the people
US took Puerto Rico

5. 27.4 the philippines Battle at Manila Bay:
Spain used the Philippines as a base for war
The Natives wanted them out
US destroyed the Spanish wooden ships
One US soldier died
Defeating the Spanish:
Spanish gave up after the rest of the US troops arrived
Fighting the Filipinos:
Filipinos were mad because US took over after the war with Spain
A new war started against the US
The war was a cruel and harmed civilians
US helped the Philippines to become its own country and gave them all of their power back in 1947

6. 27.5 panama and the canal Dreaming of a Canal:
President McKinley was assassinated and Teddy Roosevelt took over
Wanted to connect the Pacific and Atlantic oceans by a Canal
Wanted to purchase land in Panama (owned by Columbia) to do so
The Columbian Senate refused to sell
US sent warships and got Columbia out and gave Panama its independence
Panama sold the canal area to the US
Building “The Big Ditch”
US had to dig up areas of mountains to make a waterway
US gave the land back in 2000

7. 27.6 outbreak of world war 1
* Germany went into France and declared War
Tensions in Europe:
Armies were getting bigger
Each country had to keep up with the others in the size and power
Secret Alliances were made to help in case of war
Assassination Leads to War:
Austria-Hungary’s King to be was assassinated by Serbia
Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia
Russia came to help Serbia
Germans came to help Austria-Hungary
France then was ready to help Russia
The war involved more than a 12 countries
US stayed out

8. 27.7 a new kind of warfare Trench Warfare:
Both sides dug up trenches with barbed wire and booby traps outside of them
Between was no mans land
Trenches were full of disease, rats, lice
Soldiers rarely moved from those areas unless they tried to advance
New Weapons:
Machine guns claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of soldiers
All sides were using chemical warfare to kill each other

9. War at Sea:
Germany built U-Boats (Underwater Boats or Submarines)
They started blowing up ALL ships caring supplies that came in its area
Germany Sinks the Lusitania:
German U-boats blew up a passenger ship with US citizens in it
German said that they did not know
Paid the US for damages so US would not join the war
US helped out Germans enemies to get back at them

10. 27.8 make the world safe for democracy
America Enters the War:
Germany continued to kill US citizens on ships
US was angry and declared war and fought with its allies (Britain, Russia and France)
Americans Prepare to Fight:
When entering the war US only had 200,000 soldiers
They made a draft
They then had 5.2 million soldiers 
Fighting and Winning:
Russia dropped out of the war
Now more German soldiers could make it to the war front (3.5 million)
US did not want to fight in trenches
US brought tanks and airplanes to bomb and destroy the German forces
Germany stopped fighting
9 Million people died in the war

11. 27.9 struggle for peace Fourteen Points for World Peace:
Wilson came up with 14 things that would bring peace to the world
Some countries were not happy with peace
The Treaty of Versailles:
It was created to punish Germany
Germany had to give up its army, loose land and pay money to countries that it fought
League of Nations was also created to fix problems

12. Struggling for Senate Ratification:
Senate did not want to pass the Treaty because they did not want to be in European affairs
Treaty never passed
The Legacy of Versailles:
The Treaty angered Germany because they felt betrayed
A former corporal Adolf Hitler said that he wanted revenge!
