Observational Studies vs. Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT)
RCT vs. RWD Observational Studies vs. Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) All observational studies are non-interventional studies. Their objective is to collect real-world data (RWD) which are obtained under conditions of routine medical practice between physicians and patients in regular clinical care. Observational studies typically have very broad inclusion criteria. These studies typically consist of the broad patient population seen in regular clinical care and they are often conducted over periods of years. In contrast, randomized clinical trials (RCT) by design are interventional. In RCTs, treatment and clinical setting are specified and the patient population is selected by narrow inclusion and exclusion criteria.
